Faculty Biographies and Speaker Notes
Jeffrey Anshel, O.D.
Dr. Anshel is a 1975 graduate from the Illinois College of Optometry. He has written numerous articles and books regarding nutritional influences on vision and computer vision concerns. The second edition of his book, Smart Medicine for Your Eyes is scheduled for publication in 2008. Dr. Anshel is the principal of Corporate Vision Consulting, where he addresses the issues surrounding visual demands while working with computers. He also offers on-site consultations and seminars to corporations related to visual stress and productivity in the workplace. He lectures nationally to eyecare providers on nutrition and nutritional genomics topics. Dr. Anshel is the President of the Optometric Nutrition Society and maintains a private practice in Carlsbad, CA.
Kim Castleberry, O.D.
Dr. Castleberry is President and CEO of Plano Eye Associates; a full scope primary eye care practice located in Plano Texas. The practice provides treatment of eye disease and vision disorders for all age groups. The practice is fully automated and computerized with electronic medical records. The practice has an in house optical surfacing and edging lab providing 1 hour optical services. Full scope eye care services are provided at or through Plano Eye or its affiliated surgical facilities. The facility contains 9000 sq. ft., housing 15 exam and treatment rooms. Technology incorporated into the practice includes Rodenstock integrated refracting suites, corneal topography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, Ophthalmic ultrasound, pachymetry, retinal imaging, and visual fields. Dr. Castleberry also founded EyeLab Technologies, a wholesale optical manufacturing company providing ophthalmic lenses for local area doctors and optical dispensaries.
David C Eldridge, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Dr. Eldridge currently provides consulting services for physicians and ophthalmic technology companies. He formerly was Vice President, Science and Technology of OccuLogix Inc., a biomedical research technology company. Prior to joining OccuLogix, Dr. Eldridge served on the founding Board of Directors and was the Executive Vice President Clinical Affairs TLC Vision. Dr. Eldridge was previously in private practice and adjunct professor at NSU College of Optometry. He was the first OD to perform laser procedures in the US and has performed and taught Excimer photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as well as Argon and Yag laser procedures.
In 1993 he was named “OD of the Year” and in 2000, he was selected to the Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians “Team of the Century”; is a charter member of the AOA Contact Lens Section and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He has served as President of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry, President of the Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians, member of the OAOP Board of Directors and past Chairman of the OAOP Education Committee.
Lars Freisberg, M.D.
Dr. Freisberg is a vitreoretinal specialist, for Retina Vitreous Affiliates, an office of BVA Advanced Eye Care. Dr. Freisberg completed his ophthalmic education at New York University and his Fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has been in private practice since 2002.
Dr. Freisberg has served as both Principal and Co-investigator during clinical trials and research studies, has published articles in numerous medical journals, and served as an instructor to medical staffs and students. He is a Board Certified physician and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Freisberg is available for consultation of diseases and surgery of the eye’s retina and vitreous for conditions including macular degeneration, retinopathy related to diabetes and those related to high myopia and injury.
Scott Hibbets, O.D.
Dr. Hibbets is currently serving as the resident at BVA Advanced Eye Care and TLC Laser Eye Center in Tulsa where he is specializing in ocular disease and refractive surgery management. Dr. Hibbets received his Doctorate of Optometry in May of 2008 from Northeastern State University College of Optometry. In 2003 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University, majoring in Biological Science.
Marc A. Goldberg, M.D.
Dr. Goldberg is a cornea/external disease, refractive surgery and advanced cataract surgical specialist practicing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr. Goldberg completed college and medical school training at Duke University, an ophthalmology residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, a two year cornea/external disease and refractive surgery fellowship at Barnes Hospital/University of Washington, St. Louis as well as a year of academic practice at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City prior to moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1996. Dr. Goldberg currently holds a volunteer faculty position with Northeastern State University School of Optometry as well as faculty positions with both Oklahoma State University School of Osteopathic Medicine and University of Oklahoma- Tulsa School of Medicine. He remains active in both clinical and academic ophthalmology, teaching residents and students as they rotate through his office. He is currently chief of ophthalmology at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa and is the past medical director and current medical co-director of the Oklahoma Lions Eye Bank. He remains a referral destination for cataract, cornea, external disease and refractive surgery patients in Northeastern Oklahoma and surrounding areas.
James Grue, O.D.
Dr. Grue is a consultant to the AOA HIT Study Group and Gulden Ophthalmics. He maintains a private practice in Canton, PA.
Rebecca Johnson, C.P.O.T, C.O.T., C.O.E.
Rebecca Johnson holds certifications as an Ophthalmic Technician, Paraoptometric Technician, and an Ophthalmic Executive. Her experience includes Director and Instructor of a CoA-OMP accredited Ophthalmic Assistant Program at Carver Career & Technical College and Director of Training at the Virginia Eye Institute. Rebecca has taught over 100 continuing education courses with approval from JCAHPO, AOAPS, AOC, OPS, ABO and NCLE. She has published continuing education courses in the AOA Paraoptometric Section Newsletter and is the Editor of The Self Study Course for Paraoptometric Certification, Third Edition. She is a Team Leader on the AOAPS Education in Writing Committee and is listed on the AOAPS Speaker’s Bureau. Rebecca is currently utilizing her years of experience to train ophthalmic personnel across the United States through her consulting company, Foundation Ophthalmic Training & Development, which is located in Lakeland, Florida.
Cresa Marshall
Cresa Marshall, as a Clinical Implementation Specialist for Optos, trains clinical staff throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states how to implement and use the Optomap Retinal Exam. Cresa received both her Bachelors degree in Marketing and her Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma City University. In addition to employment with Optos, her professional background includes positions with Blue Cross Blue Shield of OK, Axia Health Management, and TLC Laser Eye Centers.
Kristopher May, O.D.
Dr. May is a graduate of Southern College of Optometry and completed a residency in ocular disease. He was center director for West Tennessee Eye Care and team eyecare provider for both the Memphis Grizzlies and the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A affiliate Memphis Redbirds. Kris now owns a group private practice with two locations in north Mississippi. He lectures internationally and is adjunct faculty at Southern College of Optometry.
Brandon Moore
Brandon worked as an optician for four years while attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He then accepted a position with A&A Optical as a territory manager. The next four years, he developed a territory by understanding his customers’ retail methods. Brandon used information and policies from many different practices to help all of them maximize their profitability. The last two years he has been the Western District Manager for A&A Optical with a focus on helping our customers’ grow their business.
Thomas Porter, O.D.
Dr. Porter is the Director of the Low Vision Service at St. Louis University's Dept. of Ophthalmology where he offers low vision care to hundreds of new patients each year. Dr. Porter is a graduate of Drake University, the Southern College of Optometry and holds an MBA from St. Louis University. Dr. Porter is a member of the American Academy of Optometry, where he holds the status of Diplomate in Low Vision, the highest professional credential available in the field. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Porter is also Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Occupational Therapy at St. Louis University, and has been Eschenbach's Clinical Optometric Consultant for 5 years.
John Rumpakis, O.D., M.B.A.
Dr. Rumpakis is currently President and CEO of Practice Resource Management, Inc., a firm that specializes in providing a full array of consulting, appraisal, and management services for healthcare professionals and industry. He developed ReimbursementPLUS® (www.ReimbursementPlus.com), the industry leading internet-based CPT Code Information and Reimbursement software program and is also the founder of Opt-ED Professional Continuing Education which creates and delivers top tier continuing education around the country. Recently name the Chief Medical Coding Editor for Review of Optometry, he has been extensively published on the topics of third party coding & billing, practice management, team building, maximizing effectiveness and profitability, including the textbook “Business Aspects of Optometry”. Dr. Rumpakis is a popular lecturer both nationally and internationally. In addition to having had a successful solo practice, Dr. Rumpakis developed the practice management curriculum at Pacific University College of Optometry and taught optometric & medical economics there for over a decade. A 1984 graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry, he currently serves on the AOA’s Congress Committee, was the primary architect of the AOA Advantage program, and has served as chair for the Student Debt Special Project Team, the Gold Disk Project Team, and the Practice Perpetuation Project Team.
Jerome Sherman, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Dr. Sherman is perhaps optometry’s most prolific writer, publishing over 650 clinical articles, research manuscripts, book chapters and two CDs. He is senior author of three books that were published in 2007, and has delivered over three thousand lectures both nationally and internationally. He has served as a contributing editor for several optometric magazines. Having graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he presently holds the position of Distinguished Teaching Professor at State University of New York College of Optometry and the Schnurmacher Institute of Vision Research. Concurrently, he maintains a private practice, The Eye Institute and Laser Center, in New York City. Dr. Sherman is a founding member of both the International Foundation for Optic Nerve Disease (IFOND) and the Optometric Retina Society (ORS).

Bill Tullo, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Dr. Tullo is the Director of Optometric Services for TLC Vision. He is the leader of the Clinical Directors Advisor Group. In addition he is a member of TLC’s Clinical Advisory Group. Dr. Tullo received his undergraduate degree at State University of New York Stonybrook and his doctorate in Optometry from State University of New York College of Optometry. He has served as Assistant Clinical Professor for ten years specializing in cornea and contact lenses and is currently Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor at SUNY state College of Optometry. He has maintained a private practice in his hometown Princeton, New Jersey over the past twenty years. Dr. Tullo lectures extensively internationally on refractive surgery, cornea and child abuse. Dr. Tullo is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association.
Virgil Van Dusen, R.Ph.,J.D.
Dr. Van Dusen is a professor of pharmaceutical sciences in the College of Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Prior to joining Southwestern he practiced extensively as both a pharmacist and an attorney. Courses that he teaches include law, ethics, and pharmacy administration. Dr. Van Dusen has authored numerous articles dealing with management issues related to pharmacy practice and has a special interest in legal concerns for pharmacy education. He has presented research at both state and national conferences and is frequently invited as a speaker for pharmacy organizations. His service to the University includes past chairman of the benefits committee and current chairman of the intellectual property committee. He also currently serves on the pharmacy college curriculum and awards committees.
